Daniel was born on June 29, 1948, in Palmer, MA, the son of John and Ellen (Furey) Murphy.
Daniel was predeceased by his mother Ellen (Furey) Katawicz and Stepfather Peter Katawicz, father John Murphy, and beloved brother-in-law and best friend, Joseph Murphy-Mancini.
Daniel was a graduate of Palmer High School. He attended Dean Jr. College then moved to New Hampshire to attend Plymouth State University, where he received his Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education.
Daniel spent time as an educator and later went on to become owner and operator of Boutwell’s Bowling Center in Concord, NH. Daniel was a renowned Candlepin bowler and held many state titles. He also competed on Channel 5 and commentated for various candlepin bowling shows.
Daniel was inducted into the Candlepin Hall of Fame in 1999 for his competitive abilities. He was also presented the President’s Award in 2014 for outstanding accomplishments and contributions which have bettered the sport of Candlepin bowling. In addition, Daniel was the International Candlepin Bowling Association bowling instructor who hosted clinics to train instructors so that they could, in turn, help others learn to bowl.
Daniel was an avid golfer and a longtime member of Concord Country Club.
Daniel is fondly remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, and grandpa/papa who
enjoyed talking sports and investments with his family, especially about the Red Sox and Patriots. He also took pride in chatting with friends about his children and grandchildren. Quick with a laugh and fond of storytelling, Daniel was well known for his anecdotes from his many years in the Candlepin community. He loved a good joke and making others laugh.
Daniel is survived by his wife of 27 years, Cheryl (Silber) Murphy; and children Tonia Murphy of Davis, CA; Shannon (Paul) Speidell of Glen Allen, VA; Kristin (Tom) Hebert of Hooksett, NH; and Matt Currier of Concord, NH.
Daniel also leaves behind his four beloved grandchildren, Malcolm Burns, of Davis, CA.; and Connor Speidell, Riley Speidell, and Cooper Speidell of Glen Allen, VA.
Daniel is survived by two brothers, John Murphy of New London, CT, Paul (Mary) Murphy of Monson, MA, and his sister Ellen Murphy-Mancini of Wilbraham, MA, as well as several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given to Granite VNA HOSPICE, 30 Pillsbury Street, Concord, NH 03301 which helped to care for Daniel in his final days.
