Bev was living proof that not all superheroes wear capes, and she was a matriarch if ever there was one. Bev led her family with love (and perhaps an occasional wooden spoon or tug of the ear). Her purest joy was watching generations of her loved ones sit around and swap stories while they devoured her delicious creations. It should be noted that she guarded those recipes to ensure that she would be missed forever. Her trademark smile and contagious laugh were a treat to behold. She truly loved her family and raised all her children to know that no matter how old they are, that the door is open, the fridge is full, and their best friend was right there ecstatic to see them. That open-door policy also went for whatever stranger she met along the way that she thought might benefit from having a place to belong (her loved ones refer to these folks as guests of the Hotel California). And no visit to her home was complete without a trip to the “pink” room for a fire and a glass of merlot. She loved to celebrate special occasions (or random Tuesdays), but more importantly she never left any of us to struggle on our own. The family takes comfort in knowing that she will no doubt find a way to help us through this devastation.
Bev was born in Lee, New Hampshire on March 12, 1941, to Lloyd and Helen Saulnier. She lived in the seacoast area for much of her younger life, an era from which she held many life-long friendships. She relocated to the Concord area in the late 1960s and began a successful career as a business owner in the medical transportation field with her husband Neil. Her demeanor was perfect to help put people at ease in times of need. She took immense pride in “adopting” both employees and clients. Being a nurturer was her factory setting.
Beverly is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Neil Hurd, of Bow; her children, Robert Ayer and his girlfriend, Laura of Loudon, Christopher Ayer and his wife, Ellen of Concord, Erin Smith and her husband, Jason of Canterbury, Megan Shaffer and her husband, Gary of Hampstead, NC, Ryan Hurd and his girlfriend, Tessa of Bow, Scott Hurd and his wife, Christine of Washington, Sharon Howe of Bostic, NC; daughter-in-law, Katherine Ayer of Smithfield, VA; nephew, William Saulnier and his wife Ann, of Gilford. Additionally, she leaves behind 28 grandchildren (of which Kaitlyn claims to be the favorite) (as do 27 others), 19 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandson.
As sad as we are to lose her, we take great comfort in knowing she is spending today back in the arms of her Daddy that she missed so dearly, with her precious sons Kevin, Brian and Michael and her beloved grandkids Danielle and Jeffrey. We can only assume that our prayers went unanswered over the weekend because they needed her more right now (guessing Brian needed a character witness at the Perley Gates).
Finally, in Bev’s honor, let’s all tip back a glass of merlot, tell some fun stories and cry from laughter instead. She wouldn’t want it any other way.
Save us a seat at the table, Mom!
