Susan Marie Nichols (81) passed away peacefully on April 7, 2024, surrounded by her husband and children at Kobacker House in Columbus, Ohio. She was born June 25, 1942, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to the late Charles and Norma Crouch. Sue graduated from Mt. Lebanon H.S. where she sang in the “Triple Trio,” performed a solo to 1500 people at graduation, played both the piano and organ, and was immersed in “Young Life.” In 1964, she graduated from Mt. Union College with honors, was named Outstanding Senior Woman, served as President of TriDelta Sorority, and served four years as Vice-President of her class. Sue was a Bowman Scholar in Classical Literature, and was a member of the Panhellenic Council, the Alpha Lambda Delta National Honorary Sorority and the Student National Education Association. She was inducted into Laurgier—the highest academic honor a Mt. Union woman can achieve. Upon graduation and over the next fifteen years, Sue was an English teacher in Upper Arlington, London City Schools and at the Ohio Peace Officers Training Academy. After teaching, she left the profession to enter the private sector where she finished out her career, ultimately retiring to devote the next fifteen years caring for her five grandchildren.
While her countless academic and professional accomplishments were remarkable, Sue prioritized her family above all other considerations. For sixty years, she was a loving wife and partner to her adoring husband Bob and a proud parent to her two children Melissa McAdow (Sam) and Rob. Upon Bob’s retirement in 2013, they left London for Upper Arlington to be closer to their kids and to participate in the endless activities of her grandchildren Sam, Lindsey, Ryan, Nathan and Carson. Sue is additionally survived by her brother David (Patti), her sister June, her sister-in-law Beth Buck (David), and all of their wonderful families.
A memorial service will be held in her honor at First Community Church - South Campus in Marble Cliff on Friday, April 12 at 2 p.m., followed by a reception at Schoedinger Northwest, 1740 Zollinger Avenue in Upper Arlington from 3-5 p.m. Sue’s ashes will be interred in Union Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Central Ohio Alzheimer Association (visit www.Alz.org). To share memories or condolences, please visit www.schoedinger.com.
