Roberta Ann Smith, a vibrant soul with an unwavering spirit, entered into eternity on February 9, 2024. Born on January 26, 1943, to Raymond Sr. and Curlee Townsel in Columbus, OH, Roberta was a beacon of joy to all who knew her.
Roberta was a graduate of Columbus South High School. She went on to work for Job and Family Services as a case worker and eventually retired from the State of Ohio.
Roberta's faith was central to her life. She dedicated her life to Christ in the late 1970s and was a faithful member of Rehoboth Temple Church of Christ. Additionally, she was an associate member of Believers' Ministries Outreach Center. Roberta served diligently as a member of the usher board and choir, where she trained many ushers with a deep sense of responsibility. She was also active in prison ministries and contributed to the church bulletin printing staff.
Roberta's commitment to outreach and ministry extended beyond the church walls. She generously shared her talents by teaching others how to crochet and by sharing her faith through evangelism. Who could forget her infamous "Red, White, and Hallelujah" message, a powerful testament to God’s work in her life and her ability to inspire others to embrace the joy of salvation.
Roberta's warmth and infectious personality endeared her to all who knew her. She would light up any room with her presence and was known for her determination, kindness, love, and care for others. Her steadfast faith, selflessness, and devotion to her family and community were evident in all aspects of her life. With a great sense of humor, discernment, and no shortage of wisdom, she embraced life fully and loved her family deeply. And for all of those that knew her, knows that she loved hard, but danced harder.
In her leisure time, Roberta could be found casting her line in her favorite fishing spot, crafting beautiful creations with her crochet hook or sewing needle. Remarkably, she learned to swim at age 60 and found joy in activities like softball and participating in the Silver Sneakers program. Her zest for life knew no bounds, and her boundless love knew no limits.
She now joins her beloved parents and siblings—Raymond Jr., William, Waddell, Clyde, Louis Townsel, and Fannie Odom—in heavenly reunion.
Left to cherish her memories are her precious daughters, Stacy (Jeffrey) Cromwell, Tracy Simmons, and Robin Herriott; grandchildren, Tamara (Dominique) Carson, Shateka (Stefan) Bennett, Ejon (Tara) Knapp, Venise Carter, Kara Cromwell, and Deon (Ashley) Cromwell; great-grandchildren who will carry forward her legacy, Alexus Roberts, Kimmya Bennett, Christian Parsons, Kamille and Karmen Bennett, Ashton Knapp, and Ty Carter; sister, Ruth Townsel and brother, Robert Townsel; close friend, Lowrenal Banks; special daughter and caregiver, Jewellyn Kubi; and a host of nieces, nephews, other close relatives, and friends.
Roberta Ann Smith's earthly journey may have come to an end, but her legacy of love, laughter, and faith will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who were privileged to know her.
