Richard (Dick) H. Compton, loving husband of 62 years to Fran, proud father of three - Steven Compton, Lisa Bateson, and Suzanne Allison - and father-in-law to Michael Bateson and John Allison, passed away on Thursday, June 15, 2017 at his home. Dick graduated from the University of Minnesota, during which time he served in the Air Force, and met and married the love of his life, Fran (Flitton). Early in their marriage, they moved to Mexico to focus on their writing careers, then later on to Sioux City, IA, where Dick was an evening anchor for KVTV. A respected journalist, Dick traveled around the world covering a wide variety of events and leaders, and was awarded a Columbia University CBS fellowship. Dick and Fran moved to Columbus, OH in 1962 to continue his journalism career with WRFD radio. He and Orley Bosworth started Modern Media in 1972, a public relations firm that specialized in political issues and campaigns for both parties. Dick then transitioned to the Central Ohio United Way as Communication Director. An accomplished writer, he followed with a free-lance writing career, focusing on historical books and articles. Dick loved traveling and hiking with his wife in unique areas, including the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary in British Columbia (five times!), the US West, Canada, and Costa Rica. He will be remembered for his strong love of his wife, their children and families, all animals (especially dogs and wolves), his lifelong dedication and support of the Democrat party, his artistic ability, storytelling, love of a good book and pipe, and Sunday supper of beer and popcorn. In addition to his immediate family, he is survived by Karen and John Stith, Jennifer and Rich Adams, Rebecca, Luca, and Mimi Ciancanelli and Liz, Brian, Liam and Fiona McClear. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the wonderful and caring support provided by the Visiting Angels of Westerville who became a very important part of our extended family. We also express our gratitude to Hospice of Central Ohio for the extraordinary care they provided to Dick and the family. Family will receive friends Monday, June 19, 2017 from 5-7 p.m. at SCHOEDINGER NORTH CHAPEL, 5554 Karl Road, Columbus, Ohio. A private family service will follow at a later date. Dick asked that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Nature Conservancy of Ohio (6375 Riverside Dr., Ste 100, Dublin, OH 43017).
