Michael R. Smith, 76 passed away with his family by his side on November 21, 2014 after a courageous battle of glioblastoma. He was born October 23, 1938 in Grantsburg, WI but called his home and established his roots in Central Ohio. Michael was preceded, at a very young age, in the death of his parents and is survived by his beloved wife Joyce (Blaho); daughter Michel (Mel) Pankow of New Albany, OH; son, Michael (Michelle) Isaiah of Daly City, CA and granddaughter Morgan Pankow.
Michael was born with an entrepreneurial spirit and started his own business in his twenties which grew into a multi-million ESOP corporation of present day; Chardon Laboratories. Michael retired and recently sold his business of 45 years but continued to stay engaged in his love of business and investment in a family-based business with three self-storage locations in Central Ohio. His retirement allowed for him to develop a love of the game of golf, travel and was fortunate to develop some everlasting friendships in his places of retirement, Lakeside MT and Mesquite NV. Michael was graduate of the University of Minnesota but was a true Buckeye fan, a Kentucky Colonel, a life-long member of the Aladdin Shrine Temple and Lutheran church.
His advice, wisdom and love will be missed by many but his legacy will live on by the many peoples lives he touched and opportunities he gave throughout his life-time.
Family will accept visitors beginning at 4:00 PM with memorial service to follow at 5:00 PM on Friday, December 12, 2014, Schoedinger Chapel, 1051 E Johnstown Rd, Columbus, OH. Reception to follow; location will be announced at service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Michael Smith’s memory for Brain Cancer research to The James Comprehensive Cancer Center at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center Fund #311812.
