Juanita Faye Glassco Lucas passed from this life to be with the Angels on July 22, 2020, with her loving daughter and care giver Carol at her side.
Juanita was born January 2, 1930, into the loving family of Harold F. and Lillie (Harris) Glassco in Waverly, Ohio. Juanita was always an excellent student, and one of only four African Americans to attend her high school during that time (the other three were her sisters). She graduated from New Holland High School in 1948 as class Salutatorian. She attended secretarial school and became an administrative assistant, working for the State of Ohio from 1951-55. Juanita married James Lucas, Esq. (now deceased) in 1955, and her daughter Carol was born in 1957.
She started a successful career in the Selective Service and was stationed at DCSC, finally retiring as a Systems Analyst after 30 years of service. Always an avid learner, Juanita continued her education and earned a B.S. in Business Administration from Franklin University in 1975 and an M.A. in Business Administration from Central Michigan University in 1979.
She lived a full and active life as a loving single mother, while she pursued her education and career. She was devoted to her daughter Carol, and most enjoyed seeing Carol develop her gifts (especially in music, ministry, and education). Carol returned the devotion, caring for her mother in the last two years of her life, which Carol considers a privilege.
Carol describes her mother as gentle, selfless and gracious, a sweet Christ-like spirit, a woman of eloquent reserve and intellectual curiosity. Juanita enjoyed traveling, especially with her daughter, regularly playing Bridge at the Columbus Bridge Center, making pottery, following and discussing news and politics, and challenging herself with games like Jeopardy!
Juanita was preceded in death by her two sisters, LaVerne Glassco Evans and Bonna Dean Glasco Butler, and five brothers Marlin Franklin Glassco, Harold Frank Glassco, Danny Kaye Glassco, Joey Ellsworth Glassco, and Richard Leon Glassco.
In addition to her daughter Carol B. Lucas, Juanita is survived by her sister Julia Glassco Brown and brother Ronnie Glassco, nieces and nephews, and many other family members.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Mt. Carmel St. Ann’s Hospice in the memory of Juanita Lucas.
A private Christian service will be held at Schoedinger Northeast, 1051 E. Johnstown Rd., Gahanna officiated by Pastor Patrick K. Gamble, Sr., of First Church of God, Washington Court House. A private burial will take place at the historic Crestview Cemetery in Chillicothe, Ohio, where Juanita will be laid to rest with her parents, grandparents, and other family members.
