John James Gibson

He was born in Barnesville, Ohio to Charles Edgar Gibson and Mary Barrett Gibson on December 13, 1930. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Lena Gallagher Blohm and first wife of 39 years, Esther DiPaolo Gibson.

He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Kathy; daughter Cindi Palma (Pat); sons Brad (Ginger) and Brian (Lisa) and stepson Michael Stacey. He is also survived by his 11 grandchildren Christine Palma Loggins (Jake), Emily Palma Rogers (Caleb), Bethany Gibson Fowler (Chase), Daniel Gibson, Michael Gibson (Caroline) and Amy Gibson Carpenter (Cody), Grayson Gibson, Sasha Gibson and Oliver Gibson, Carissa Stacey and Autumn Stacey. Hoot leaves 7 great grandchildren: Charlie and Emme Fowler; Gracie and Deacon Gibson; Mack and Major Loggins and Jocelyn Rogers.

After graduating from Barnesville High School, Hoot served in the United States Air Force from January 3, 1951 to December 15, 1954. He earned his black belt in Judo while stationed in Japan.

At 17, Hoot joined the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing of America and continued enjoying the music and friendships for 65 years. He was the proud owner of Hoot’s restaurant, where he enjoyed serving food and jokes for almost 20 years.

After being cared for at home, Hoot moved to Mayfair Village Assisted Living in June 2022. He made many friends, staff and residents alike, and entertained them with his voice, his beloved harmonicas and his humor. Hoot loved to laugh and make others laugh, too. He would want his family and friends to continue his legacy of love, joy and humor!

A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30am, Wednesday, November 15, 2023 at Atonement Lutheran Church, 1621 Francisco Rd, Columbus, OH 43220. His urn will be privately placed at Union Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Atonement Lutheran Church.
