Jerry was born in Malverne, New York. He graduated from University of Detroit High School in 1967. He then obtained his Bachelor of Science from Boston College, and his PhD from the Ohio State University, both in Chemistry. He then worked for the Department of Surgery at OSU Hospital for many years before retiring in 2013.
Jerry was the beloved husband of Karen Louise Leonhart for 38 years. Together, they built a life filled with love and shared memories. He was a devoted father to Anne Lown (Alex) and Benjamin Johnson (Samantha), and grandfather of Malcolm and Brighid Lown, who brought him immense pride and joy.
A passionate supporter of the Ohio State Buckeyes, Jerry’s enthusiasm for his favorite team was infectious. He also had a deep love for travel, finding joy in exploring new places and cultures. He particularly enjoyed vacationing on the beaches in Mexico and cruising the Mediterranean and rivers of Europe. Closer to home, he was an active supporter of Upper Arlington Crew and dedicated much of his time to volunteering at organizations such as Charity Newsies, Gladden House Food Pantry, and the Furniture Bank of Central Ohio. His commitment to giving back to his community left a lasting impact.
Jerry’s warmth, dedication, and generosity will be deeply missed by those who knew him. He asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Charity Newsies Clothing Fund.
A visitation for Jerry will be held Saturday, January 11, 2025 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Schoedinger Northwest, 1740 Zollinger Road, Columbus, OH 43221.
