James M. Thornton, age 77, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, November 13, 2020 at Grant Hospital. James was born on January 23, 1943 to Robert L. and Dorothy Thornton. Jim graduated from West High School class of 1961. He proudly served in the US Army and returned to work as a Pressman for the Columbus Dispatch and retired in 2005 after 40 years of service. James was a member of St. Mary Magdalene Church, Local Union #15 IGCU, and Wolf Quarter of Century Club. Jim was an avid sport enthusiast he played football, baseball and golf in the American Legion Baseball and Arlington Baseball Clubs. Jim coached football at St. Mary Magdalene, Bishop Ready, Father Wehrle, Bishop Hartley and St. Charles High Schools. Preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Robert L. and Charles J. Thornton; sister, Kathleen Brooks. Survived by his wife of 53 years, Dolores "Lori" Thornton; son, James J. Thornton; daughter, Melissa L. "Lisa" (Gerald) Morvant; grandchildren, Mitch (Deanna) Fuller, Joey Thornton, Natalie Thornton, Sarah Morvant; great grandchildren, Charlie and Khloe Fuller; Aunt Thelma (Sister Joy) Gaffney; sisters-in-law, Susan and Cindy Thornton; brother-in-law, Michael (Monica) Powers; nieces and nephews, Matt (Katie) Thornton, Pat (Jamie) Thornton, Kara (Rob) Hillis, Ryan (Courtney) Brooks, Jeff (Tonya) Thornton, Aaron (Katie) Thornton; several great nieces and nephews, extended family and family friend, Scott McMillen. Private funeral service will be held at Heart and Hope Funeral Home by Schoedinger, 3030 W. Broad St., Columbus, Ohio 43204 followed by interment at St. Joseph Cemetery.
