Elizabeth “Betty” J. Holland, age 98 of Upper Arlington, passed away Sunday, October 13, 2024. Betty was born in Akron and grew up in Columbus, daughter of the late Charles and Mary Houston. Family was the center of Betty’s life, from a wonderful childhood spent with five siblings to raising six children of her own. Betty’s home in Upper Arlington was filled with love, laughter and endless gatherings that family and friends will always cherish. Betty hosted team celebrations after her sons brought home Golden Bear state football championships, graduation parties after each of her six children received diplomas from the Ohio State University, receptions following the weddings of her children, and, of course, large holiday gatherings including an annual Christmas Eve party that grew to include15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. A legendary baker known for her homemade buckeyes and fudge, Betty also built an impressive career as an office manager in the department of Systems Development with Chemical Abstracts. She loved to golf, travel, cheer for her Buckeyes, celebrate her Irish heritage on St. Patrick’s Day, and listen to the symphony. She was an active member of the Vivace Unit of the Friends of the Columbus Symphony and a past member of the UA Football Parents Group. Betty is preceded in death by her five siblings; son, Michael Francis Holland; daughter, Elizabeth Ann Barthelmas; and grandson, James Francis Holland III. She will be greatly missed by her children: Joanne Holland, Kathryn Sterner, James Francis (Diane) Holland II, and Patricia (Kit) Holzaepfel; daughter-in-law, Ellen Holland; former sons-in-laws Jim Sterner and Richard Barthelmas; grandchildren, Julie Sterner (Akash) Patel, Amy Sterner (Carleton) Nelson, Corbin Holland, Kimberly (Lee) Harrington, Laura (Jason) Douridas, Natalie Holzaepfel, Jeff (Emily) Holzaepfel, Stephen Barthelmas, David (Jessica) Barthelmas, Michelle Barthelmas, Carly Holland, Michael Holland II, Emily Holland, and Megan Holland; 12 great grandchildren; and many other extended family members and dear friends. Visitation for Betty will be held from 5-7 P.M. Tuesday, Oct 22, 2024 at Schoedinger Northwest, 1740 Zollinger Rd. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, October 23, 2024 at St. Andrew Catholic Church, 1899 McCoy Rd. Entombment Resurrection Cemetery. The family would like to thank the staff at Friendship Village of Dublin and Dublin Methodist Hospital for the loving care provided. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
