Donald Eugene Denny, 68, of Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio died December 15, 2010 at Kobacker House after a short illness. He was born October 19, 1942 in Zanesville to the late Robert and Evelyn (Young) Denny of New Lexington, Ohio. Don was a graduate of The Ohio State University with a B.S. in Education and Political Science and taught Secondary Social Studies for three years in Muskingum County. After graduation, he earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Capital University and completed course work for a Ph.D. in Education Policy and Leadership at The Ohio State University. Don was employed by The Ohio State University in 1969 and retired in March, 2010 after 41 years of service to students, staff and the community. His many talents were utilized in Housing and Student Life Director roles. He was also Director of Olentangy Residence Halls where he led the OASIS Project. As a special assistant to the Director of Housing, Don renovated student housing at the ATI campus in Wooster, Ohio and redesigned facilities and programs at Stone Lab in Put-in-Bay, Ohio. As Associate Director of Business Computing and through his work in Housing, Food Service and Events Centers, Don directed the Student Affairs Y2K initiative and managed the implementation of the Younkin Success Center. He retired in 2002 and received the Distinguished Service Award from the Council of Graduate Students. Don returned part time in 2002 to direct the Younkin Success Center and also served as Administrative Manager of Wilce Student Health Center. In addition, from 1992 through 2010, Don was an Adjunct Professor in Microcomputer Technologies at Columbus State Community College. Don was a Director of the Western Golf Association and Evans Scholars Foundation and for 21 years from 1989 through 2010 was Faculty Advisor to the Evans Scholars at The Ohio State University. Don was a remarkable servant and leader and so embodied the Evans Scholar values of Scholarship, Leadership, Chapter Living and House Maintenance that he became a mentor to the Faculty Advisors supporting the other 13 Evans Scholar Chapter Houses at universities across the Mid-West. In an almost 10 year effort Don led the search for property, successfully identified the location and oversaw construction of the new Evans Scholar House at Ohio State. The new House is home to the 73 Evans Scholars at Ohio State and a gem in the redevelopment of the near East Campus area. Don’s always kind and thoughtful counsel influenced and indeed changed the lives of hundreds of young men and women who were privileged to attend Ohio State as Evans Scholars. His service will be forever treasured by his extended Evans Scholar family. Don was a lifetime member of the Hocking Valley Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution in Perry County, OH and was an active member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Columbus, Ohio where he served as a lector. In addition to Nancy, his wife of 36 years, Don is also survived by his sister, Roberta McGee of West Palm Beach, FL; brothers, Ronald of New Lexington, OH, Norman of Thornville, OH and Mark (Silver) of Columbus, OH; sister-in-law, Dr. Therese Stewart of Gainesville, GA; brother-in-law, Frank (Jeanie) Miros of Lavaca, AR; aunts, Betty Gordon of Caldwell, OH, Eileen Kaffenberger of Lancaster, OH, and Nellie Miros of Detroit, MI; uncle, Richard (Gloria) Denny of Heath, OH; nephews, Robert (Karen) Denny, Michael (Teresa) Denny, Todd (Karen) Denny, Dr. Mark (Dr. Sarah) Denny, Michael Miros, Stephen (Kim) Miros, Gregory (Kathy) Miros, Dr. David (Jen) Miros, and Christopher Stewart; nieces, Michele Westmoreland, Lisa (Don) Drewry, Mary E. Stewart, Roxane Love, Jaclyn Denny, and Dr. Kara Denny; cousins and many friends. Family will receive friends Sunday, December 19, 2010 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm with a prayer service at 7:30 pm at SCHOEDINGER WORTHINGTON CHAPEL, 6699 N. High St., Columbus (just South of I-270). Family will also receive friends Monday from 10 am until the time of Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 6899 Smoky Row Rd., Columbus, Msgr. Cleves, Celebrant. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, 9571 N. High St. (just North of I-270).
