Barbara J. Beckwith-Burgess, age 84, of Columbus, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, February 3, 2021 in Newburgh, Indiana with her son and his family by her side. She was born July 12, 1936 in Huntington, West Virginia, only child of the late Augustus James and Ophelia (Williams) Beckwith. Barbara was a retired 5th and 6th grade teacher with the Cleveland and Columbus Public Schools for over 30 years. She then was a health educator and cancer advocate with the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital for fifteen years. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ural and Yvette Vinson; grandchildren, Lucretia Vinson, Ural Vinson Jr., Elijah (MaryLou) Vinson, Damion Stribling and Darriel Lindsey; great grandchildren, Jordan, Tylan, Ural III, Brandon, Juden, Phoenix, Elishah, Charity, Monique, Dorian, Donovan, Cameron and Jayden; great-great granddaughters, Keirsten and Lillian; other relatives and many friends. Besides her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her husband Donald R. Burgess. She received her Bachelor and Master’s degrees from Marshall University in Elementary Education. Barbara always looked her “DIVA” best and she made everyone feel unique and special to her in their own way. She was a supporter of the arts, especially to new artists or artists in training in all venues. Due to current restrictions, her family will have a private service.
