April 30, 1936 – October 8, 2021
Sarah J. Worthington died Friday October 8, 2021 in Columbus, Georgia. She was born April 30, 1936 in Columbus, GA to George (G. J.) Jordan and Sarah Phelts Jordan.
A graduate of Jordan H.S., she spent her early years working for the City of Columbus in the Finance Department and last held a position as Secretary to the School of X-Ray Technology at The Medical Center (now Piedmont). In October 1949, Sarah accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and was baptized at Edgewood Baptist Church. She was a founding member of this church fellowship and would later serve many years volunteering in the church nursery, widow’s ministry, and was active in her Sunday School Class and Seniors activities. She loved her Edgewood family and gladly served them.
Married to her high school sweetheart Albert Lee Worthington in 1954, they were married for 65 years until his passing in April 2020. Their love was genuine, transparent and exemplified a Christ centered marriage. They set an example of devotion for their family of 3 children, 8 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. Their home was a welcoming home to family and friends where love, grace and assistance could always be found. Their hope was that they could be a Godly example, and that all members of their family would come to faith in Jesus Christ.
Both Al and Sarah loved and cherished their family, and surviving members include daughter Nancy Holloway and son-in-law Mark, and two sons and daughters-in-law Ken and Alison Worthington, and Brad and Jean Marie Worthington. Grandchildren and spouses are: Kristin H. Boeckh, Katherine H. Jones (Brandon), Johnathan Holloway, Brett Worthington (Katie), Lauren W. Callihan (Corey), Justin Worthington (Mandee), Jacob Worthington (Stephanie), and Ashley W. Jenkins (Gabe). Great-grandchildren are: Mckinley, Ezra, Micah, Parker, Emma, Callie, Kelsee, Kasidee, Karlee, and Olivia. Sarah came from a large family of 13 siblings whom she dearly loved. She is survived by Barbara Reese, Jack Jordan (Caroline), Cheryl J. Flowers, Phillip Jordan, Patricia J. Cloud (David), and Regina J. Keller (Burton) and preceded in death by Richard Jordan, Jimmy Jordan, Jeff Jordan, Judy J. Gambill, Sheila J. Rodgers, and Mike Jordan. She also loved her extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family would also like to express their deepest love and gratitude to their mother’s caregivers for their care, compassion, and devotion. Sarah’s caregivers are Patricia Brooks, Shanterol Baker, Alicia Nesbitt, and Constance Dixon. Additionally, the family would like to express their love and gratitude to Evelyn (Ebbie) Tompkins, family friend and hospice nurse for Preferred Care Hospice, for her care and support of both Al and Sarah in their final days.
The family will warmly welcome family and friends on Tuesday October 12th at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM with a celebration of life service following at 2:00 PM and burial at Parkhill Cemetery. Nephew Pastor Ed Grifenhagen of Church on the Trail will officiate the service and worship will be led by Associate Pastor Andy Johnston of Edgewood Baptist Church. Pallbearers will be Sarah’s grandsons and nephew Dan Jordan. The family is very grateful for the many expressions of love and compassion. Flowers are welcome, or donations may be made to Edgewood Baptist Church.
