Sanford Holley "Sam" Morton March 25, 1938 - November 25, 2010 PHENIX CITY, AL — Sanford Holley "Sam" Morton, 72, of Phenix City passed away on November 25, 2010. Memorial services will be held on Monday, November 29, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus. The Morton family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the Chapel. Mr. Morton was born March 25, 1938 to the late Sanford A. Morton and Gladys Holley Morton in Perry County, Alabama. He graduated from Perry County high school. He served his country in the United States Air Force while in the Air Force, he was attached to the Atomic Energy Commission at Los Alamos, NM. He witnessed 23 atomic bomb test while in the Marshall Islands. He was a graduate from Marion Military Institute and received his Bachelor of Science degree from Jacksonville State University and a MBE degree from the University of Montevallo. Mr. Morton served as an instructor for eight years at Marion Institute before coming to CVCC in 1974 where he was an instructor until his retirement in 2000. He was inducted into the 1st class of CVCC Hall of Fame in 2008. Since his retirement, Mr. Morton enjoyed attending Nascar races, traveling the U.S., and driving the tail of the dragon in North Carolina. Sanford Holley "Sam" Morton is survived by his wife of 49 years, Emily Morton; three sons, Robert Morton of Phenix City, AL, Kelley (Donna) Morton of Ranger, GA. and Kurt Morton of Morgantown, WV; three daughters, Kim (Jason) Prater of Salem, AL, Kathryn (Jeff) Fikes of Jourdanton, TX and Emily Garner of Hamilton, GA; 15 grandchildren, Holley Adams, Samantha Morton, Emily Morton, Jacob, Zachary and Sydney Fikes, Daytona Morton, Luke Garner, Joni (Donald) Bourne, Morgan, Sarah and John Thomas Prater, Skylar (Josh) Roberts Walker, Brandon and Cole Fikes; two great-grandchildren, Seth and Audriana Bourne; one brother, James W. (Vickie) Morton of Marion, AL; one sister, Carol (Billy) Vines of Selma, AL; several nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
