He was raised in Phenix City, Alabama and graduated from Central High School in 1950, where he was a standout baseball pitcher. After two years in the Army, he attended Troy University while playing semi-pro baseball then graduated from Auburn University with an accounting degree.
In 1957, he married the love of his life, Judy Horne Farrar. In 1960, he went to work for Columbus Bank and Trust Company and enjoyed a thirty-four year banking career. His career included being President/CEO of Security Bank and Trust in Albany, Georgia for eleven years, followed by four years as President/CEO 0f Vanguard Bank in Valparaiso, Florida. During that time, he served on numerous civic and charitable boards. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed many rounds at CCC and Green Island Country Club in Columbus, Doublegate CC in Albany, Georgia, and Wildcat Cliffs in Highlands, North Carolina.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-five years, Judy Horne Farrar; daughter, Lindy Callahan (Mark), son, Jim Farrar (Peyton); and four grandchildren, Tucker Callahan (Krystal), Mary Carlisle Callahan Young (Ricky), Helen Farrar, and Grace Farrar; and two great grandchildren, Farrar Callahan and Pierce Callahan. He is also survived by his sisters Becky Holloway and Susan Weaver. A special thank you to caregiver Susan Colwell.
The family will receive visitors on Saturday, July 9th from 10:00 - 11:30 at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary on Macon Rd. followed by a private family burial. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to St. Luke United Methodist Church 1104 Second Avenue, Columbus, Georgia 31901 or Columbus Hospice House 7020 Moon Road, Columbus, Georgia 31909.
