She received her elementary education at Flat Rock and Carver Elementary in Columbus, GA. Marie graduated in 1958 from Spencer High School. Marie continued her higher education at Albany State and Columbus State University. She was employed with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia from 1966 to 2001, where she became the 1st black supervisor. She retired as a Production Control Analyst. Marie worked with the early coting, suicide hotline, and volunteered at St. Luke United Methodist Church. On a day filled with love, Marie united in Holy Matrimony with Srgt. Fred Singleton.
She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at New Providence Missionary Baptist Church in Columbus, Georgia under the leadership of Rev. C.C. Cloud where she sang in the “Cloudair Choir”. She later taught Sunday School and was a Deaconess.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Srgt. Fred Singleton and her stepfather, William Porter, Sr.
On Monday, September 23, 2024 the Lord said I need a strong woman. The Lord said I know who I need, I need Marie K. Singleton, servant, come home and take your rest.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory one son, Alton B. Norman of Warner Robins, GA; two brothers, George Pearce of Chicago, IL and William Porter, Jr. of Columbus, GA; two grandsons, Corey (Adrianna) Norman and Chad (Jerrica) Dempsey; a host of great grands, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A visitation for family and friends for Marie will be held Thursday, October 3, 2024 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary - Columbus, 4071 Macon Rd, Columbus, Georgia 31907. A homegoing celebration will occur Friday, October 4, 2024 at 10:00 AM at New Providence Baptist Church, 5227 14th Ave., Columbus, Georgia 31904.
Marie will be laid to rest in Ft. Moore Main Post, 64-66 Custer Rd,, Columbus, Georgia 31905.
