A service to celebrate her life will be held on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at 2:00 PM in Edgewood Hall of Striffler-Hamby. Family will visit with friends one hour prior beginning at 1:00 PM. She will be laid to rest in Hollywood, Georgia at Ebenezer United Methodist Church Cemetery on Monday, March 12, 2018 visitation will follow in fellowship hall at the church. Born in Clayton, Georgia daughter of Horace Jerry and Dallas Keener McCurry on November 24, 1916. At an early age family moved to a small farm near Clarksville, Georgia. Following graduation from Tallulah Falls High School she was employed by Sears Roebuck in Atlanta, Georgia. Lura faithfully served her country during World War II in the U. S. Navy upon discharge she attended the University of Georgia, graduating with a major in Human Relations. She returned to work for Sears in the management program, serving as Human Relations Manager in Fayetteville, North Carolina for three years, Southern Territory office for three years and as Human Relations Manager in Columbus, Georgia for 30 years.
Lura was a charter member and co-organizer of Columbus Area Recourse Management Club, member Pilot Club of Columbus, chaired Administrative Council of Aldersgate United Methodist Church for two years. She was a member of Shaw Fellowship Class and Circle 10 United Methodist Women of St. Luke United Methodist Church.
Miss McCurry was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, H. J. McCurry, Jr., James Melton McCurry, and Jack Dee McCurry; niece Linda Geneva McCurry and nephew Philip James Abbott.
Miss McCurry is survived by one sister, Maude Abbott of Auburn, Maine; nieces: Dallas Abbott Menke (William), Pamela Abbott, Joyce McCurry; nephews Edward F. Abbott, III, Michael McCurry (Wanda) and Kenneth McCurry (Brenda); one great niece, two great great nieces and two great great nephews.
Lura was a kind and loving Aunt to all of her nieces and nephews. She was a solid pillar to her family and will be greatly missed. Lura will also be greatly missed by her loving friend Barbara Register and care givers Lisa and Chantel, to whom the family owes great appreciation.
