George Washington Odom was born on September 4, 1923 in Albany, Georgia. His parents were the late Janie Mae Green and George W. Odom, they died when he was young. At the age of 15 George made his way to Canada to join the Royal military during WWII. While serving in the European campaign in Italy he turned 16 and returned to the United States and joined the U.S. Army and returned to Europe where he had been serving in Europe. George faithfully served his country during, not only WWII, but also during the Korean War and Vietnam Conflict. He was awarded a purple heart in 1950, and retired after over 28 years of service as Command Sargent Major. While back in the U.S. he was in Columbus, Georgia and met his bride, Eloise A. King, she was from the “Cotton Block” in Bibb City, they were married for 61 years. Together they raised their four children across the globe later to settle back in Columbus, Georgia. After his service he went back to school at Columbus Tech and learned the trade of a machinist and worked with Columbus Foundries for numerous years until his retiring to stay at home and spend time with his loving wife, Eloise A. Odom, until her death in 2011. George was a Sunday School teacher at Morningside Baptist Church for many years. He is survived by daughters, Susan Segrest and her husband, Roger of Columbus, Georgia, Peg Odom and her husband, Paul Colianni of North Carolina, Gloria Odom Barr and her husband, Lewis Barr of Tennessee, son, Theodore Odom and his wife, Vickie of Texas; seven grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren. George will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
A graveside service will be held in Parkhill Cemetery on Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at 11:00 AM with Reverend Scott Tucker officiating and military honors. Visitation will be held at Striffler-Hamby of Columbus on Tuesday evening from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM.
