Mr. Matheson was born on August 5, 1922 in Columbus, GA. He was the son of the late Ella May Akin Matheson and Charles F. Matheson, Sr.
Mr. Matheson was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanette Stringfellow Matheson, and former wife and mother of his children, Betty F. Matheson, three brothers, George Heard Matheson, Charles Fields Matheson, Jr., and James Daniel Matheson; and two sisters, Zaidee Louise Matheson Bryant, and Sarah Mae Matheson Stockwell.
Survivors include his children, Don and Pat Matheson of Greensboro, NC, Rob and Gayle Matheson of Orlando, FL, Joe and Caroline Matheson of Columbus, GA, Pat and Larry Lane of Columbus, GA, Linda and Fred Chamberlain of Columbus, GA, and Harold and Kaye Hill of Columbus, GA; his grandchildren, Carey and Christy Matheson of Mooresville, NC, Andrea and Chris Coe of Greensboro, NC, Hunter Matheson, Alyssa Matheson, and Chase Matheson, of Orlando, FL, David Matheson, Melissa Matheson, Matthew and Ellen Lane of Columbus, GA, and Mitchell Lane of Auburn, AL; his great grandchildren, Salem, Jax, Sawyer, Creed, and London Matheson, Macie and Chandler Coe, Corbin Matheson.
Funeral services will be held in the Chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Columbus on Monday, October 17, at 11:00 am with Dr. Edwin M. Cooper officiating. Interment will follow in Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday evening, October 16, from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.
Mr. Matheson was a member of Eastern Heights Baptist Church for many years where he served as an ordained deacon, chairman of Board of Deacons, chairman of pastor search committee, Sunday school teacher, and in various other roles. He later became a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church and the Miller-Wilson Sunday School Class.
Mr. Matheson was a World War II veteran. He was employed at Burnham Service Corporation for 39 years and retired after serving the company the last 17 years as Vice President. Mr. Matheson was a recognized expert in interstate rate negotiations and ICC state rate setting.
