COLUMBIA - Virginia Ashby Griffin, 96, of Columbia, died Wednesday, December 17, 2014. Born in Florence, SC, on March 15, 1918, she was the daughter of the late E.P. Ashby and Virginia Heard. Virginia graduated from Florence High School and attended Anderson College. In 1937, she was employed by the SC Employment Security Commission as a records clerk. At the end of a 35-year career, she retired as the state’s senior Unemployment Claims Adjudicator. In retirement Virginia served over 15 years as a volunteer at Palmetto Baptist Hospital, contributing over 4000 hours’ service as chairwoman of the Sewing Committee. In addition, she enjoyed years serving as a volunteer for Columbia’s Meals-on-Wheels program and as a member of numerous social organizations, including the Columbia Women’s Club, the Thursday Book Club, and several local bridge clubs. She was a world-traveler, having journeyed extensively throughout Europe, Asia, the Middle East and N. Africa. In recent years, she enjoyed pleasant company and comfortable surroundings at Wildewood Downs Retirement Community. Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Elijah W. Griffin of Belton and a son, Edward W. Griffin of Columbia. She is survived by two brothers, Dr. William T. Ashby of Summerville and E. P. Ashby, Jr., of Fairbanks, AK; a son, Calvin A. Griffin (Candis) of Columbia, nephew, Tom Ashby (Jeanette) of Summerville, nieces, Ginger Ashby Webster (Ed) of Charlottesville, VA, and Sheryl Anne Stapp (Burton) of Orlando, FL; and the special family of her sister-in-life, Dorothy Rogers Binnicker (Mabry, Mabe, Jeff and Kim, Jean and Wayne, and Madge). A memorial service will be held at Forest Lake Presbyterian Church, 6500 North Trenholm Road, Columbia, on Sunday, December 28th at 4:00 pm.
