We are so sad to announce the sudden passing of our dad, brother, uncle, and faithful friend. Thurman Barnwell Sauls, 85, of Columbia, SC, entered into eternal life on June 22, 2022 at Oakview Park assisted living facility, Powdersville, SC.
Son of the late Ernest and Lucille Sauls, he is preceded in death by his wife Dionne Rowell Sauls, son Thomas Sauls and his brother Dexter Sauls. He is survived by his loving daughter, Debbie Massingill (Ben), brother Bill Sauls (Cheryl), sister Cindy Minion (Dave), grandchildren Krista Massingill and Will Massingill, and a host of extended family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at Dunbar Funeral Home, 3926 Devine Street, Columbia, SC on Sunday June 26th at 2:30 p.m. Private burial will follow. Prior to the service, the family will receive friends and have visitation beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mr. Sauls was a graduate of Columbia High School and received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Civil and Sanitary Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. As a prominent local home builder and developer for over 50 years, and Past President of the Columbia Home Builders’ Association (HBA), he received Home Builder of the Year in 1971 from the Columbia HBA. Early in his life, he achieved the rank of 32 degree Scottish Rite Mason, and was an active member of Jamil Shrine Temple. In his active years, he could often be found in the field hunting or on the golf course. In his spare time, he loved to read…..anything from novels to the IRS tax code. He was a long-standing member of Kilbourne Park Baptist Church.
The family extends its great appreciation to the staff at Oakview Park for the wonderful care and attention they provided during his last several years.
