COLUMBIA - Richard M. Kennedy, Jr., 91, died Saturday, August 20, 2016. A native of Birmingham, Alabama, he was born December 12, 1924, son of Richard M. Kennedy and Marie Wheeler Kennedy. He attended the public schools of Mountain Brook and the Baylor School in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In 1947 he received his B.A. Degree in economics from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. At Wisconsin he earned his school letter as coxswain for the Wisconsin Crew. The crew won the national championship for rowing in 1946. He was a member of the ATO Fraternity, the Pershing Rifles, and the University Theater Committee. In 1950 he married Jane Huggin of Hogansville, Georgia. In 1958 the family moved to St. Petersburg, Florida, where he was a field agent for Federated Mutual Insurance Company. While working, he attended Stetson Law School and received his J.D. Degree in 1961. After passing the Florida Bar exam, he practiced law with the Zewadski Law firm in St. Petersburg. In 1963 the family moved to Columbia, where he joined the C&S Bank as Assistant Trust Officer. After passing the South Carolina Bar exam, he met Harry Dent and they opened a law office in the name of Dent and Kennedy, Attys. When Harry Dent was called to Washington to work for President Nixon, the partnership was dissolved. Robert G. Price then joined Mr. Kennedy and they formed Kennedy and Price, Attys. They practiced together for some 30 years until Richard retired. Activities and clubs included the board of the Township Auditorium, Forest Lake Club, the St. Andrews Society of the City of Columbia, and Kiwanis Golden K. He was a member of Shandon Presbyterian Church. After a private burial at Elmwood Cemetery, a memorial service will be held in the chapel at Still Hopes Retirement Community at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 23, 2016. The family will receive friends immediately after the service in the Keenan Center at Still Hopes. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. He is survived by his wife, Jane H. Kennedy; son, Richard M. Kennedy III, MD (Cathy) of Columbia; daughter, Janie K. Trouche (Paul), of Mt. Pleasant; grandchildren, Clayton H. Kennedy, Jane Fleming Fuller (Michael), and Andrew McDaniel Kennedy; Timothy Trouche and Peter Trouche; brothers, Robert B. Kennedy of Gainesville, Georgia and Carter Kennedy (Susan) of Birmingham, Alabama.
