Pam's professional career started just after she graduated from Lower Richland High School in 1966 at Southern Bell/ATT as a rate and route operator then moving over to business and long-distance operator. In January of 1969 she married William "Billy" Becknell and began traveling with him in the US Navy during which time she started her career at the Veteran Administration Medical Center in North Chicago, Il as an operator November of 1981. When they relocated to Goose Creek, SC she continued working at the Charleston VA working her way up from the records department to the wards by taking terminology and transcription classes at night. In 1985, Bill was slated to retire after the ship did a retrofit so they relocated the family to Eastover, SC and Pam began working at WM Jennings Bryan Dorn VA. They divorced in 1986 and Pam continued raising their boys David and Chuck while growing her career from a ward clerk to the new MCCR Billing group that was formed. She retired from Dorn VA in March of 2008.
Pam led an active life outside of work and on into retirement. She volunteered with Cub Scouts in Illinois and here in Eastover supporting her children and grandchildren leading fund raisers and helping organize events to include being the Scout District Popcorn Chair. She was a 25 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star who served multiple terms as Worthy Matron. She chaired her high school reunion committee and served as a primary communication point for her extended family and community. An avid member of the Elgin Red Hat Club and enjoyed spending time with her Movie Club as well. She was most passionate about her church, Trinity Presbytery, and serving as an Elder. One of her happiest days near the end was being able to attend church and a session meeting near the end. She loved her family, friends, and community all the same. "To pieces to pieces in all the world." That is what she told her grandchildren every time she saw them.
