Otis Clebourne ‘Clay’ Johnston III, 74, of Georgetown, passed away on November 26, 2023. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, December 1, 2023 at Prince George Winyah Parish Church.
Clay, the son of the late Ruth Anderson and Otis Clebourne Johnston, Jr, was born September 25, 1949 in Columbia, SC. He graduated from A.C. Flora High School in 1967 and the University of South Carolina in 1971, where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He worked with his father and grandfather in the family business, Wright Johnston Uniforms, eventually taking over the business.
He was a long-time active member of the Saint Andrews Society in Columbia, serving as its president, then treasurer for 10 years. In addition, he was an Eagle Scout, active supporter of the South Carolina Waterfowl Association, South Carolina Ducks Unlimited, was a former member of Forest Lake Country Club, Executives Association of Greater Columbia, and the Society of the Cincinnati, the nation’s oldest patriotic organization.
The ultimate outdoorsman and consummate southern gentleman, he will always be remembered as a kind, caring, and selfless man, always willing to share a wee dram of his Single Malt scotch. His love for hunting and the outdoors was only surpassed by the immense love held in his heart for his family and friends. As a devoted father, he passed down his love of hunting to Hollis, with whom he travelled extensively on many hunting adventures.
Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Patricia ‘Pat’ Gilbert Johnston; daughter Christine ‘Hollis’ Lumpkin (John Parker); granddaughters, Johnston ‘Taylor’ Lumpkin and Ruth ‘Ruthie’ Rutledge Lumpkin, all of Georgetown; siblings Elizabeth Kincaid ‘Beth’ Johnston, Ruth Mackfie ‘Mackey’ Johnston, both of Columbia, and Christine Johnston ‘Christy’ Nexsen (Julian Jacobs Nexsen, Jr) of Greenwood.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the wildlife education program at Camp Leupold - 8444 Old River Road, Pinewood, SC 29125.
