COLUMBIA - Mary Lee Smith Gibson, 84, of Columbia passed away peacefully Thursday, July 12, 2012 at Hospice House after an extended illness. Born August 29, 1927 in Waterloo, SC, she was the daughter of James Mikel and Pearl Penelope Long Smith. She attended Winthrop College, worked in the education field and retired from Columbia College as Periodicals Librarian. She was a faithful member of Main Street United Methodist Church, where she sang in the Magnifiers Choir and taught the Mothers’ Sunday School Class.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 14, 2012 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Irmo/St. Andrews Chapel, with the Rev. Joe Cal Watson and the Rev. Randy Smith officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the A. B. Ferguson Sunday School Class. Burial will follow in Bush River Memorial Gardens. The family will greet visitors beginning at 1:00 p.m. prior to the service.
Surviving are her husband of 61 years, Robert H. Gibson of Sterling House of Harbison, 51 Woodcross Road, Columbia SC 29212; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Leonard Bouknight of Irmo; grandsons and their wives, Justin and Sherry Bouknight of Columbia and Jeremy and Laura Bouknight of Anderson; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Tillman Bouknight of Columbia; sisters-in-law, Glennie Smith of White Rock, SC, Betty Gibson of Greensboro, NC and Jane Gibson of Hemingway, SC; beloved cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by five brothers and three sisters.
