A graduate of A.C. Flora High School, Martin attended Wofford College for two years and graduated from the University of South Carolina with his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. He worked for Citicorp and then Bank of America for many years before retiring in 2013. Through work, he relocated multiple times in the Midwest before settling permanently in Atlanta in 1986 where he remained for the rest of his life.
He was a big Carolina Gamecock fan, especially basketball and football. Always active, Martin played many sports himself including basketball, golf, and tennis. He shared this passion with his daughter by coaching many of her youth sports teams. He enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, Caribbean,
Canada, Europe, and North Africa. On his travels, he looked for any opportunity to go deep sea fishing.
Martin is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Vengoechea (Jaime) of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren Daniel and Sarah of Atlanta, GA; brother Richard (Novelle) of Columbia, SC; partner Regina Redding of Milton, GA; former spouse Lancee Smith of Decatur, GA; nieces Meredith (David) of West Columbia, SC, Lisa (Tim) of Columbia, SC, and Stella (Ken) of Sharon, SC; great nieces and nephews, Shannon, Andrew, and Sarah Jean of West Columbia, SC, Craig and Grace of Columbia, SC, and Griffin, Jackson, and Cooper of Sharon, SC; and many other family and loved ones. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, William.
Family will receive guests at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, in Columbia, SC, on Thursday, June 29, 2023 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A memorial service will take place at St. John's Episcopal Church in Shandon (Columbia, SC) on Friday, June 30, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. followed by a graveside service at Elmwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorial contributions in Martin's name to Wounded Warriors.
