Martha Ellington Hodges, 88, passed away on Sunday, February 11, 2024. Born in High Point, NC, she was the daughter of the late Jasper Ellington and Margaret Perry Ellington. Martha lived in High Point until her husband’s passing in 2011 and then lived in Columbia, SC.
Mrs. Hodges was a graduate of High Point College where she received her degree in Education. She taught Physical Education in middle school for 20 years and coached basketball. Martha loved North Carolina and was an avid UNC Tarheel fan who enjoyed watching basketball and football. She was also a Carolina Panthers fan. She loved playing ping pong and played in the NC and SC senior games, winning championships. Martha enjoyed going to the local community center and participating in many activities. She loved her family and grandchildren.
Surviving are her daughter, Renee B. O’Neal of Columbia, SC; son, James “Jamey” Hodges (Leslie) of Pensacola, FL; four grandchildren, Nolton O’Neal (Courtney), Megan Player (Matt), Josh Maas, and AJ Hodges; and seven great-grandchildren, Jackson, McKenzie, Cooper, Lincoln, Memphis, JoJo and Leo.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Harold Thomas Hodges, and daughter, Margaret Bolin.
A visitation will be held from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 14, 2024, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. A private ceremony will be held in Floral Gardens Park and Cemetery, High Point, NC.
