Dr. Miller was born in Charleston, SC on October 17, 1930. He was the son of Fredanel Mixson Miller from Valdosta, Georgia and Joseph Henry Miller, Jr. from Rock Hill, SC. His family moved to Columbia in 1932. He attended Schneider Elementary School, Hand Middle School, and Dreher High School, graduating in 1948.
Dr. Miller then attended Davidson College, where he ran track and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. He graduated from Davidson in 1952. He then attended Emory Medical School, from which he graduated in 1956.
Following his graduation from medical school, Dr. Miller served as a surgery resident at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta from 1956 to 1958. He then entered the Navy and served as a flight surgeon in Pensacola, Florida and Patuxent River, Maryland from 1958 to 1961.
After his naval service, Dr. Miller served as a resident in urology at Boston City Hospital from 1961 to 1964. He then returned to Columbia in 1964 to practice medicine with Columbia Urological Associates. He practiced urology for 37 years and retired in 2001. Dr, Miller was truly loved by his peers, his staff and his patients.
Dr. Miller was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as both a Deacon and Elder. Dr. Miller enjoyed serving his community. He was a member of Richland Sertoma for many years and coached Pop Warner Football. He was a proud member of the W.W.G. He loved family, his many friends, and spending time with his 11 wonderful grandchildren, particularly at his mountain house. He also loved golf, sailing, reading, watching sports, and in particular Gamecock football, baseball and basketball, Davidson and Duke basketball, and, most of all, the Cincinnati Reds. He was a wonderful son, brother, husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Margaret Myers Blair Miller; his brother, Charles “Ginger” Mixson Miller, and his wife, Elizabeth; his sister, Miriam Miller Mays and her husband, Locke; his daughter, Cherry Miller Kuntz and her husband, George, and their children, Patricia, Lily, Sophie and Miller; his son, Joseph Henry Miller, IV, and his wife Jenny, and their children, Joe, Sam and Campbell; his step-daughter, Karen Blair Manning, her husband Fred, and their children Margaret, Fred and Weston; and his step-son James “Jay” Howard Blair and his wife, Debbie, and their son, Jim.
He was predeceased by his step-son, John Charles Blair.
Dr. Miller was a kind and gentle man with a generous soul. All who knew him were blessed. He will be missed greatly.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 15, 2018 at First Presbyterian Church Cemetery, followed by a brief reception in Jackson Hall.
