WEST COLUMBIA - A Mass of Christian burial for Joseph John Loeffler,101, will be celebrated 10:00 am on 11 June, 2022 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Following the funeral mass, a reception will follow at Dunbar Funeral Home (Devine Street). Interment will be at a later date in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring, MD.
Mr. Loeffler died 28 May, 2022. Born September 28, 1920 in Baltimore, MD, he was a son of the late Joseph George and Margaret Finn Loeffler. Joseph graduated from Calvert Hall High School and then the University of Baltimore. In 1941, he was appointed to the FBI. In 1944 he was inducted into the U.S. Navy, serving aboard the APA-80 ‘Elkhart’ in the Pacific during World War II. After the Navy, Joseph continued working for the FBI and was detailed to the assassination case relating to President John F. Kennedy. Later he was the Special Agent in Charge at the Columbia, S.C. Division and had investigative and administrative responsibilities for the entire state of South Carolina.
He retired in December of 1976 following 35 years of government service. After retiring from the FBI, he worked for SCE&G for six years in the Nuclear Division. Joseph was a member of the Society of Special Agents of the FBI. In addition, he was a former member of the Spring Valley Country Club and of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
He is survived by his son-in-law, Ret. Col. William Wheeler; daughter, Judith Seibels (John); grandchildren, Kimberly Schall, Christy Rogers, Wendy Schmitz, Laurel Justice and Jay Seibels; nine great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Joseph was predeceased by his first wife, Rita Adelaide Loeffler; his second wife, Virginia Lee Loeffler; his daughter, Marian Therese “Tess” Wheeler; and brothers, Frank W. Loeffler and Henry A. Loeffler. He was loved by all and will be missed by so many.
