COLUMBIA - A memorial service for John Charlton “Sonny” Ragin Jr., 87, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 11, 2016, at Mill Creek United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. Mr. Ragin died Saturday, June 4, 2016. Born November 19, 1928, in Orlando, Fla., he was a son of the late John C. Ragin Sr. and Caroline Patterson Ragin. He graduated from the University of S.C. in 1950 with a BS in chemistry. He attended medical school and served as an infantry man in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict in 1950-51. He retired as Supervising Chemist with Dupont in Lugoff. A man of great faith, he had a deep love for his family and friends. He loved animals, especially dogs, and enjoyed the outdoors. After retirement, he enjoyed playing golf. Having grown up during the Depression years, he was frugal with his own needs but very generous with the needs of others. Surviving are his wife, Blanca Cruz Ragin; sons, John C. Ragin III, Robert A. Ragin and their mother, Ann Pitts Ragin Melton; stepson, Javier Cruz; brother, Walker Patterson Ragin; sister, Sherri Goodrich (Mark); niece, Caroline Ragin Freeman (Gil); nephews, Walker Patterson Ragin Jr. (Pat), William Motte Ragin; great-niece and great-nephew, Ragin Lee Freeman and John Gilbert Freeman.
