John served our country in the US Navy for 4 years and he was extremely proud of our country and our flag. He was in VP2 Squadron and served as an Aviation Electronic Technician on the VP2 Neptune aircraft. He then graduated from Auburn University and joined IBM in Pensacola, Florida. He was moved to Columbia, SC, where he met and married his current wife, Sherie (Stockman) Harbin. John was an accomplished woodturner and belonged to the Palmetto Woodturners Association.
He is survived by sons, John, Jr. of Texas City, TX, Brady of Murrells Inlet, SC, and Peter of Lexington, SC, and a daughter, Jennifer (Travis Ellis) of Cayce; grandchildren, John III (Lindsay) of Pittsburgh, PA, Stephanie (Preston) Hesse of The Woodlands, TX, Crystal Patterson of Wichita Falls, TX, Joshua Mealer of Oklahoma City, OK, Henry Harbin of Lexington, SC and Gage Harbin, of Murrells Inlet, SC. He was predeceased by a daughter, Laura Harbin of Houston, TX and a brother, Jack Harbin of Mobile.
John and Sherie made their home on the shores of Lake Murray where John enjoyed many years of fishing, water skiing, and never tired of boat rides to see the Purple Martins or just cruising around on the lake they loved.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
