Janice Heath Carll, 68, of Columbia, SC died on Saturday August 12, 2023. Jan was the daughter of the late Jack Howard Heath Sr. and the late Myrtis Heath Jolley, and the brother of the late Jack Howard Heath Jr.
She is survived by her two sons Heath Carll (Leah) and Fleer Carll both of Columbia, SC. In addition, she is survived by her two grandchildren Hank Carll and Elsie Carll, special friend Carol Underdonk and many other cousins and friends.
Jan graduated from Hammond School as a national Merit scholar and was accepted to Duke University and Clemson University, but decided to obtain her Bachelors in Science Nursing Major from the school where her late father took her to football games as a child. Two of her lifelong passions were affirmed while at Clemson- the joy of helping others and Clemson football. Jan was a very warm social friend to many and was selfless to those who needed help.
Her passion of helping others could be seen in her career path as well. Shortly after college, she was one of the first NICU nurses hired at Baptist Hospital in Columbia, SC and a NICU nurse at Bryn Mawr Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. She worked as a DHEC home health nurse and then retired from the Department of Veteran Affairs where she helped veterans receive post-service resources and was considered a subject matter expert on Agent Orange compensation claims.
Jan was a God-fearing woman who was an active member of Shandon United Methodist Church. She was part of the Wesley Fellowship Sunday school class and represented the church as a Stephen Minister, by promoting faith in life crises to individuals. Jan served as one of the church’s leaders of the Worship Service committee for many years as well.
The highlight of her life was caring for and participating in the lives of her family, children and grandchildren. She was a very involved mother and Mimi. Whether it was youth sports, Clemson football games or precious moments after school/summers, Jan loved spending her time with her children, grandchildren and their friends. She taught them the importance of manners, love for others and lessons in trying to make a difference in the lives of others.
A celebration of life for Jan will be at Shandon United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday August 19, 2023, with a reception in Player Hall afterwards. In lieu of flowers, please consider sending donations to Shandon United Methodist Church 3407 Devine Street Columbia, SC 29205 or to the Alzheimer’s Foundation at www.alzfdn.com.
