COLUMBIA - James William “Bill” Bynum, Jr. passed away on January 22, 2017 of cardiac arrest. Bill was the son of the late Elizabeth Wells Bynum and James William Bynum, Sr. who were both of Columbia. He attended the University of South Carolina and worked for USC for over 40 years in various capacities. Bill was one of the longest serving staff members of the National Advocacy Center and an integral part of its Distance Education team and instructional support. The National Advocacy Center located on the USC campus serves as the institution tasked with training prosecutors for the U.S. Department of Justice. When the NAC, as the project came to be known, was just in the planning stages, Bill was instrumental in helping design AV infrastructure for the program. He became the lead USC liaison, acting as operation manager, and he brought years of expertise to the table to the benefit of the Department of Justice. His loyalty to and support of the mission of the NAC and the staff that supports it continued until his death. Bill loved band music, Broadway, and the craft of making a beautiful video, and even in his last years of his poor health he remained an avid reader and astute observer of the U.S. public affairs and public policy. He is survived by his sister, Sarah Bynum Gladden of Afton, Virginia; his niece, Elizabeth Gladden Kehoe of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; nephew, Joseph R. Gladden, III of Oxford, Mississippi; as well as Columbia cousins, Tyler P. Smith, Peter Przekop, John Gibson, and Virginia cousins, Katherine Bynum Griffith of Arlington and Rosalie Bynum Robertson of Farmville. There will be a service celebrating Bill’s life at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, January 30, 2017, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the American Heart Association, 190 Knox Abbott Drive, Cayce, SC 29033.
