WEST COLUMBIA - A funeral service for Jack George Douglass, 89, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, June 1, 2023 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Woodridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
Mr. Douglass died Monday, May 29, 2023. Born in Eureka, S.D., he was the son of the late Jack Hiram and Lillian Pietz Douglass and was raised in Pollock, S.D. He was a member of Mount Hebron United Methodist Church. He retired from the U.S. Marine Corps following 20 years of service and then worked with AT&T Nassau Metals in Gaston, S.C. While in the Marines, he served in Okinawa and the Philippines before being deployed to Vietnam in 1966. He returned stateside and ended his military career as an instructor at the Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort, S.C.
Jack was an avid bowler and served as the treasurer of his bowling team. He also enjoyed fishing with his sons, Tim and Bruce. He was also very active with the Palmetto Marine Corps League, which supports activities such as Toys for Tots and repairing bicycles and transporting them to the Connie Maxwell Orphanage for Children.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Elizabeth Carr Douglass; sons, Timothy Wayne Douglass Sr. (Denise Lucas) of West Columbia, Bruce Elliott Douglass (Karen Porter) of Chapin; daughter, Denise Marie D. Greer (James L. Greer Jr.) of Fayetteville, G.A.; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Dewayne Douglass (Darlene) and Gilbert Douglass (Dagmar)
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Marine’s Memorial Foundation.
