Ellen was born in Abbeville, South Carolina, the daughter of Henry and Agnes Smith. She grew up in Due West, South Carolina. While completing her bachelor’s degree at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, she met her husband, Herb Hamilton, who was stationed at Fort Jackson during his service in the Navy. After they married, Ellen worked as a medical technician while Herb finished law school. The couple started their family in Columbia, South Carolina, where they established lifelong friendships before moving to Rock Hill, South Carolina in 1993. They remained in Rock Hill for almost 30 years.
Ellen was endlessly curious. She loved to read, especially with her book club. Ellen played bridge and garnered great joy from her bridge club. Skilled with her hands, she was both an accomplished pianist and calligrapher. She served her community through the Junior League and before health issues intervened, was active in Rock Hill’s First Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church.
One of Ellen’s favorite things was to find (or create) the perfect gift for an individual or occasion, often going to great lengths to do so. Most of all, though, she adored the gift of motherhood and watching her two boys mature into the men they have become.
Ellen is survived by her husband, Herb; her son, Will, and his wife, Anne; her son, John, and his wife, Kara; her brother, Ken Smith, and his wife, Ann; and her sister-in-law, Lendon Noe.
A private service for immediate family will be held in Due West. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, 201 East White Street, Rock Hill, SC 29730.
