COLUMBIA - Dorothy Cameron Tringali, 92, of Columbia, wife of the late Dominick Tringali, died Monday, April 30, 2018. The daughter of William McIver Cameron and Gertrude Ashmore Cameron, she was born October 5, 1925, in Greenville. She graduated from New Hanover High School in Wilmington, NC, attended Converse College and graduated with a B.A. in journalism from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. She was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority.
Dorothy was the Women’s Editor of the News & Observer in Raleigh, NC, from 1950 until 1961. She served as president of the North Carolina Press Women’s Association, and was known for her coverage of spring and fall fashion shows in Paris and New York. During her newspaper career in Raleigh, she had the honor of interviewing Eleanor Roosevelt, Bess Truman and Lady Bird Johnson, as well as fashion designer Oleg Cassini. Dorothy was later a reporter for the Columbia Record, where she covered the state legislature, before becoming a public relations account executive at Newman, Saylor and Gregory in Columbia. For almost twenty years there, she handled the account of the National Broiler Council, directing the annual National Chicken Cooking Contest and food media trips across the country.
She was a member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church for the past 50 years, where she had served as a Deacon, Sunday school teacher, Girl Scout leader, program director for the Savvy Seniors, member of the knitting club, and in other capacities. She was a past member of Columbia’s Current Literature Book Club.
Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Tringali Piho and her husband Paul of Washington, D.C.; a son, John Cameron Tringali and his wife Melissa of Columbia; four grandchildren, Katherine Elizabeth (Kate) Tringali Reese (Miles) and John Cameron (Cam) Tringali Jr of Columbia, William Paul (Willie) Piho and Daniel Phillip Piho, of Washington, DC; sisters-in-law Mary Benson Cameron of Jacksonville, NC and Betsy Massey Cameron, now of Columbia, and a number of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her two brothers, William McIver Cameron Jr of Jacksonville, NC, and John Roderick Cameron of Charlotte, NC.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, May 4 at 11:00 a.m. at Eastminster Presbyterian Church, followed by visitation in the church parlor. A private service of interment will be in the Eastminster Memorial Garden. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 3200 Trenholm Road, Columbia, SC, 29204.
