Doris Harrison Goodwin was born July 28, 1925, in Concord, North Carolina. She was the second youngest of the eight children of Rosa Brown Harrison and William Baxter Harrison. She attended, junior college in North Carolina. She was married to Paul Franklin Goodwin, the love of her life, from September 4, 1948, until his death on October 27, 2005, and enjoyed a wonderful life together for 57 years.
During the course of their marriage, Paul‘s career took them to many different places from North Carolina to New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts and Illinois. They were very involved with their church communities each stop along the way and accumulated many lifelong friends. Doris was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed knitting and sewing for her family. Paul and Doris enjoyed family vacations and worldwide travels from China to New Zealand, and many places in between. Upon retirement, they moved back south, retiring in Chapin, South Carolina on Lake Murray where they enjoyed many years of boating, golfing, and playing bridge.
A few years after Paul‘s death, Doris moved to the Laurel Crest Retirement Community in West Columbia. There she participated in many activities and continued to be an avid bridge player.
In the past few years, Doris needed some assistance and into her life came Catherine Riley, a person who was her companion and friend. Our family can never thank Catherine enough for the compassion and love she showed to our family.
Doris is survived by her children, Tana Vanderbilt (Larry), Amy Rowland (Mike) and Kim Goodwin (Rita); her grandchildren: Matthew (Tania) and Callie (Chad) Vanderbilt, Paul (Allison) and Daniel Rowland, and Shaina (Ryan) and Reilly (Nick) Goodwin. Additionally, she has seven great grandchildren: Noah, Luke, and Eli Vanderbilt; Regan and Grier Reichert, Emerson Rowland, and Margo Esco.
A celebration of life service will be held in the Three Rivers Room at the Laurel Crest Retirement Community, 100 Joseph Walker Drive, West Columbia, SC on Wednesday, December 8, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. Masks are required.
