Cornelia Eleanor “Connie” Thomas died on May 14, 2018, after a short illness. Connie was born June 21, 1939 in Aiken, SC, to the late Matilda and John Peyre Thomas. She was the niece of the late Catherine and Cornelia Thomas.
Connie was a 1961 graduate of the University of South Carolina and was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. Following graduation Connie worked at UC Berkeley and in Asheville. Returning to Columbia, she retired from the SC Budget and Control Board.
As a child, Connie was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church. Later she was a faithful member of First Baptist, where she found her niche singing in the choir. Also, she was a member of Forest Acres Woman to Woman Bible Study. Connie was a loyal friend and neighbor who will be deeply missed. It has been said that compassion for animals is intimately associated with good character. Over the years Connie provided a loving home to many of God’s creatures who were blind, abandoned, or disabled. She was adored by generations of Shandon cats, dogs, and pet owners who looked forward to her daily rounds with a bag full of treats.
A graveside service will be held at Elmwood Cemetery on Monday, June 4, 2018 at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Animal Mission, 127 Humane Lane, Columbia, 29209, or to Pawmetto Lifeline, 1275 Bower Parkway, Columbia, 29212.
