Born in Columbia, SC, on October 10, 1939, he was the son of the late Clarence McDaniel Dinwiddie and Lucille Boxley Dinwiddie. He graduated from Dreher High School and Wofford College.
Dan was a quiet, gentle man with a keen wit and was known for his integrity, service and devotion. Dan was a friend to many whom he met through the years.
He served in the US Navy, after which he joined his father in business at the Dinwiddie Insurance Agency. He later joined Keenan – Suggs Insurance, from which he retired in 2010. Dan was very active in the insurance industry, twice serving as president of Columbia Independent Agents Association. He also served on the Board of the Carolina Association of Independent Agents.
Dan also served on the Board of the American Red Cross and Boy Scouts of America, who honored him with a special award for “leaders of exceptional character who have provided distinguished service to scouting.” Dan was a member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral and the St. Andrew’s Society.
Dan was devoted to his wife of 56 years, Jean Spearman Dinwiddie, his children Dail Boxley Dinwiddie and Andrew McDaniel Dinwiddie (Eleanor), and his grandchildren, Andrew and Anna. In addition to his family, Dan loved his jack russells, Luke and Franny. With dog treats in his pocket, he enjoyed walking his dogs through his Forest Hills neighborhood where he became friends to all the dogs and their owners.
Other close family include his sister, Shelia Overkemp (Robert) of California, sister-in-law, Mary Bryan (Bill) of Murrells Inlet, brother-in-law, Jim Spearman (Sharon), and a special friend, Claudia Simpson.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 16th at 2 o’clock at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral.
