COLUMBIA - Anne Smith Smith, 95, of Columbia passed away peacefully on December 6, 2020. Born on May 24, 1925, in Raleigh, NC, she was the daughter of the late Edwin McGeachy and Margie Parish Smith. She moved to Columbia at a young age and attended city schools graduating from Dreher High School. She also attended Ohio State University and the University of South Carolina.
In 1947, Anne married the late William James Smith and resided in Columbia until her move to the South Carolina Episcopal Home at Still Hopes.
Anne was a founding member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where she served in various roles including president and active member of the Mackin Guild. Additionally, she volunteered at St. Joseph Catholic School where she served as president of the PTO, Brownie Troop leader, and substitute teacher. In later years, Anne volunteered her time delivering meals with the Meals on Wheels program, volunteering at Providence Hospital, and mentoring children at Brennan Elementary School. She enjoyed gardening, reading, and travel and was an avid golfer and bridge player. She spent many happy times at Seabrook Island with family and friends. Anne will be most remembered for her great love of family, her kindness and generosity, her tireless energy, her fighting spirit, and her positive attitude.
Anne is survived by her two children, Patricia Dod Lolas (Tony) and William James Smith, Jr. (Jane); seven granddaughters, Katherine Dod Williams (Scott), Anne Meredith Dod, Allison Dod O’Connor, Jane Smith Goodyear (Bryan), Elizabeth Rankin Smith, Mary Anne Smith (Daniel), Margaret Hall Smith; and six great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the dedicated staff at Still Hopes and Solutions for Living at Home for their compassionate care.
A private family graveside service will be held in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel is assisting the family.
