Alice Rose Jonas

Alice Rose Jonas, 78, was born on January 22, 1946 in Charlotte, NC to her parents Donald Roosevelt Jonas and Annie Willis Jonas. Alice died peacefully and surrounded by love on August 7, 2024 under the care of the Lexington Community Hospice House in Lexington, SC. Alice was born and raised in Charlotte, NC and enjoyed a close relationship with her parents, family trips to Ocean Isle Beach, playing last-tag with her older brother Eric, music around the piano with her mom, elaborate holiday celebrations with extended family, attending Myers Park United Methodist Church, and making friends at newly minted Myers Park High School.

Alice went on to complete a college degree at the University of South Carolina. During her college years, she spent a summer working in Yellowstone National Park with good friends. After college, Alice was dedicated to her career as a case worker at the South Carolina Department of Mental Health. She met her husband, Javier (Jay) Fernandez, while working there. She and Jay were faithful Carolina Gamecocks football fans, active members in the New Life Sunday School Class at Trenholm Road United Methodist Church, and became proud and doting parents of two sons, Wyeth and Bryce.

Alice loved to socialize and enjoyed gathering with friends and family. She stayed close with many friends and maintained close ties to her college friends. She was known for selecting the most thoughtful gifts for her friends and family. Alice always kept an eye out for helping others and was active with Meals on Wheels, delivering food to those who were homebound and walking dogs for the animal shelter. Alice loved to go with her family to the beach, swim in the ocean, cook delicious meals, take care of animals, visit the Zoo, enjoy her favorite food group (chocolate), and trips with her dear friends to Beech Mountain, NC. Her two boys remember her as a Mom who would go anywhere and do anything they enjoyed including riding roller coasters, going to the movies, and even whitewater rafting. Alice was a proud Mom who deeply loved her two boys.

Alice will be remembered as a joyful soul with sparkling eyes who was quick to share a laugh and also as a devoted Mom, wife, daughter, and friend. Her family and friends will miss Alice’s kindness the most.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Javier Fernandez and brother Eric A. Jonas Sr. of Charlotte, NC. She is survived by her children Charles Wyeth Fernandez and Bryce Jonas Fernandez of Columbia, SC, niece Annie Jonas of Asheville, NC and nephews Rick Jonas of Asheville, NC, Jim Jonas of Wichita, KS., Donald Jonas of Charlotte, NC and many dear friends.
