He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Frances Johnson. He is survived by three children, Jeanne Hackett of Edisto Beach, Michael G Johnson of Columbia and Mary Elizabeth Johnson of Columbia. He is also survived by three grandchildren, William E Hackett III (Stephanie), Katherine Hackett Rushing (Brandon) , Andrew T Johnson and great-grandchild, Mary Ella Rushing.
Al was in the Surety Bonding business for over 65 years. At one time he had his own company, J. H. Hammond Agency until he sold it to Boyle-Vaughn Ins. He was working at the time of his death with McGriff Insurance.
He was born November 10, 1930 in Boston, Massachusetts. He graduated Boston College in 1952 and entered United States Marine Corps officer training program. He retired as a Lt. Colonel in 1979. He was a member of the Gamecock Club since 1965. His greatest loves were his family, his friends, his church, Boston College and the USMC. Not necessarily in that order. He was a life long Boston Red Sox fan. He was never happier than when he was cooking a meal for others and will always be remembered for his gumbo and seafood chowder.
He was a long-standing member of St Joseph’s Catholic Church. Interment will be private and a Memorial Mass will be scheduled at a later date due to Covid. Memorials may be made to St Joseph’s Building Fund.
