Purna grew up in Hyderabad, India and moved to the United States to pursue his higher education in 1982. After completing his undergraduate and graduate degrees in chemical engineering, a PhD in instrumental sciences, and an MBA, he joined the Department of Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine at the University of Maryland in 1996. Over the past 27 years, his scientific contributions were immeasurable and his impact upon the Department and University as a whole were transformative.
Purna was a wonderful husband, father, son, brother, cousin, uncle and friend and absolutely central figure within his family and community. He brought joy and laughter into every room he entered, had an uncanny knack of making everyone around him feel welcomed and loved, and guided all of us with his words and his actions.
Purna is survived by his beloved wife, Asha Gullapalli; his two beautiful daughters; Meera and Lekha Gullapalli; his devoted mother and sisters, Rukma Bai Gullapalli, Bala Yalamanchi, and Renu Korlipara; and countless uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, and many honorary members of the family.
Purna passed away after a brief and courageous battle with cancer. He lived his life to the fullest, and we are forever grateful for his memory.
