James Harvey Walker of Dayton, MD passed away peacefully with family at his side on June 1, 2015. His life was celebrated on June 6, 11:00 a.m. at Linden-Linthicum United Methodist Church in Clarksville, MD.
Jim was born on May 9, 1920, to James and Catherine Walker of Emporia Kansas. He graduated from Kansas State University in 1942, with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. He worked at DuPont and Curtiss-Wright before joining the Navy as an officer in 1943. After serving during WWII on the USS Amsterdam in the Asia-Pacific Theater, he left the Navy as Lieutenant in 1946.
Civilian life brought Jim to Maryland, starting a 39 year career at JHU/APL in Laurel, MD. He met his wife Angeline and they married in 1954. While at JHU/APL, Jim led several missile projects, notably the Tomahawk, and was awarded several patents on supersonic missiles.
Jim began a well-deserved retirement in 1986, boating the Chesapeake on the Scuttlebutt with his family. He then returned to his first love, flying, and purchased a Piper Cherokee 6. He flew all over the country visiting his family, and attending air shows.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife Angeline. He is survived by 8 children, 17 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Arthritis Foundation (arthritis.org).
