JACQUELINE LENORA VANDERVALL
Jacqueline Lenora Vandervall was born February 26, 1935 in Richmond, Virginia to Arthur and Annie Vandervall.
On June 28, 2022 God called this beautiful angel to heaven after a lifetime of good and faithful works.
The last sibling and twin of 13, Jacqueline was educated in the Richmond Public School district. Upon graduation from Armstrong High School, Jacqueline attended Virginia Union University. With a focus on education, Jacqueline became a member of her beloved sorority- Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Graduating with a Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in Elementary Education, she began an illustrious career educating many students across the country.
Jacqueline continued her matriculations receiving a Masters of Education from Loyola College in Baltimore, Md. In addition, she completed post graduate work at Johns Hopkins University, New York University and the University of Maryland-Honors program. Her most memorable accolades were being selected Future Teacher of America, Virginia Union University and as Teacher of The Year 2000 by USA Today newspaper. This honor was the result of a national search performed by the newspaper. Jacqueline and her kindergarten class at Swansfield Elementary in Columbia, Md. were followed through grade 12 as they represented the class of 2000. A reception honoring Jacqueline and the students was held at the USA Today Newspaper Building in Northern, Va.
After a rich life of teaching, Jacqueline retired in 1997 from the Howard County Public School System. After retirement, she continued serving the community as an Academic Mentor in Howard County. Jacqueline loved her church, St. John Baptist Church where she was a devoted member of the Leroy Giles Gospel Choir, The Golden Hearts and one of the first to chair the Black History competition- The Strongest Links. Her biggest joy was coordinating the “Shoes for School” Outreach which provided gift cards so children could begin the school year in brand new shoes!
Jacqueline was the devoted and loving mother of three children whom she and her former husband the late Dr. Rudolph E. Jackson parented. They are Kimberley Jackson Marter (Andrew) of Laurel, Md, Rudolph Jackson Jr of Atlanta, Ga and Kelley Jackson Alexander (Chad) of Atlanta, Ga. She is also survived by her three grandchildren- Justin Tyler, Jonathan Marter and Kaila Alexander and one great-grandson- Bryson Tyler.
A visitation for Jacqueline will be held Saturday, July 9, 2022 from 10 to 11AM at Witzke Funeral Homes Inc., 5555 Twin Knolls Rd., Columbia, MD 21045, where a Funeral Service will begin at 11AM. Interment will be held on Monday, July 11, 2022 at 1PM at Riverview Cemetery, 1401 S. Randolph St., Richmond, VA 23220.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to, "Shoes for School", St. John Baptist Church, 9055 Tamar Dr., Columbia, Md 21045.
