Wilfred was born June 15, 1955 to late Milagros and Ricardo Macale in Angeles City, Pampanga, Philippines. He is survived by his loving wife Leonila Macale, daughter Liezl Macale, son William Macale and furbaby that Willie named “Ube”. He is also survived by his step-mother Lodovina Macale and siblings: Wilma, Wilford, Wilhemina, Wilson, Wilene & Wilnea. Wilfred was often called “Willie” or “Koya Boy”.
He attended Martinez University in Manila, Philippines, and graduated with a Bachelors in Medical Technology (Clinical Lab Scientist). After graduating, Willie enlisted in the United States Navy in 1979. He served as a Navy Hospital Corpsman 1st Class and was a part of the first team to use The Navy’s Hospital Ship, USNS Mercy (T-AH 19) Main Laboratory. Willie was involved with The Mercy’s first assignment which was a five-month humanitarian and training mission in the Philippines and South Pacific. Willie was a part of mission trips that left lasting memories. For example, without delay or hesitation, Willie would prepare and deliver units of blood for immediate needs to the natives in a trauma responses.
While stationed in Long Beach, CA, Willie fell in love with his neighbor at Lancer Apartments. Willie and Leonila married in 1986 and moved to San Bernardino, CA. Leonila was the most dedicated and loving wife/caregiver for Willie.
After serving 13 years in the U.S Navy, Willie continued to work in the laboratory as a Clinical Lab Scientist at Loma Linda University Medical Center and transferred to Kaiser Permanente for a total of 27 years. In 2012, his sister, Wilma Wilson, donated her kidney to Willie and had a successful Kidney transplant. Willie continued to work after his kidney transplant and retired in June of 2020.
Willie was strong willed and stubborn at times, but he also had an enormous heart, warm smile, and wonderful sense of humor. He will be remembered by his talents on the piano. Willie enjoyed playing any song on the piano by ear without any practice. He would fill the room with music and laughter.
Unfortunately, Willie suffered a cardiac arrest and fell into a coma for three months. During those three months, Willie fought hard and carried himself with strength. He was able to open his eyes and squeeze his loved ones hands. God gave him and his family three extra months to spend together. When his time came, he was surrounded by love. He will be missed dearly.
The family would like to thank the hospital staff who treated Willie with such care and kindness. Everyday was a dance party and karaoke in his room; filled with so much love and prayers. They would also like to thank all of their family and friends for the support and visits, which made Saturday picnics very special.
Willie will have a military burial service on June 22, 2024 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Cemetery in Colton, CA. A “Celebration of Life” will be held followed by the burial with his close family and friends to honor him. Willie will be remembered forever.
Thank you to everyone for your continued thoughts and prayers for Willie and the Macale Family!
