1938 in Colton to Jennie Fernandez.
Nellie lived eighty-five years. In 1958, Nellie
Fernandez married Edward F. Cortez, also of Colton, CA. They had been married
sixty-four years upon her death. Nellie is preceded in death by her husband,
Edward F. Cortez and her son, Lawrence D. Cortez and is survived by her children,
Eddie Cortez, Jr., Sharon A. Hughbanks, and Sylvia L. Cortez. She also is survived
by her grandchildren, Marisa (Cortez) Tahmasian, Benito and Leanna Cortez, Sam
Resendez, Stephanie (Resendez) Martinez, Kyle David and Karla Cortez, Robert
Hughbanks, and her great grandchildren, Luke Tahmasian, Laelene, Isaac, Jayden,
and Jaylene Cortez, Brayden and Kaelyn Leaf, Natalia and Cruz Martinez, and Eli
Resendez. Nellie worked twenty-five years in the Colton Joint Unified School
District, retiring as an elementary school teacher in 2004. She enjoyed dancing,
singing, walking, reading, and family gatherings. Nellie will be greatly missed by
her family and friends.
A placement ceremony of Nellie’s cremated remains will be held on Wednesday,
January 17, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at Montecito Memorial Park 3520 E. Washington
St., Colton, CA. This ceremony will be held outdoors at the Whispering Pines
Cremation Garden. An outdoor memorial reception to follow at Edward’s Mansion
West Gazebo 2064 Orange Tree Lane, Redlands, CA
