Joe Harold Harkey, aged 96, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2024 at his home in Highland, CA. He was born on November 3, 1927 in Fort Smith, Arkansas to Alice (Capps) Harkey and Joe Henry Harkey. He was drafted into the US Army in 1946 and was deployed to Japan. He moved to California upon his discharge from the Army in 1947. He met the love of his life Donna Sagers when he and a cousin came to visit a neighbor of hers in 1948 and they were married on January 9th, 1949 in San Bernardino, CA. He worked as a pressman at Citrograph in Redlands, CA for 43 years from 1949 to 1992 displaying excellence in his attention to detail. He was a perfectionist at his craft and it showed in his prints. Joe loved to talk to everyone he met about anything and everything. His family, his garden and auto racing were his biggest passions. Joe always had a story to share that could make you laugh, his wit was unmatched. He was a proud resident of Highland for over 75 years. He is preceded in death by his parents Alice and Joe Harkey; his siblings Lola Vaughn, Jewell Dodd, Vada Smith, Adelaide Trickett; his wife Donna (Sagers) Harkey and his daughter Jana (Harkey) Gentry. He is survived by his sons Donald, David and James Harkey (Karen); son-in-law, Warren Gentry; his grandchildren Justin Gentry (Alisa), Ryan Gentry (Lori), Allison Rabago (Chris), Elizabeth Lucas (Jason), Michelle Heiman (Dylan); his great-grandchildren Alyssa Carman, Chase Gentry, Ruby Heiman and Joe Lucas; his great-great grandchild Riley Dickerson. Joe was a wonderful husband, father, “PaPa” and friend who was loved and respected by all who knew him, he will be greatly missed.
Family, friends, and others are invited to the visitation for Joe which will be held Wednesday, October 16, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Montecito Cypress Chapel, 24145 Barton Road, Loma Linda, California 92324. Following the visitation will be a graveside service at 2:30 PM at Montecito Memorial Park, 3520 E. Washington Street, Colton, California 92324.
