Rodney was born October 15, 1929 in San Antonio, Texas to parents Gene and Pauline Smith. He was the youngest of two children. Rod was an outgoing person and enjoyed hunting and fishing as he was growing up.
Rodney graduated from University of Oklahoma in 1952. During college Rod met Beeper on campus in 1950. They married in Norman, Oklahoma on June 9, 1953. Together they moved to San Angelo, Texas for Rod's first assignment in the Air Force Reserves. After which Rod and Beeper moved to San Antonio, Texas to work as Wing Comptroller at Kelly Air Force Base. Later, Rod opened his own tax consultant firm. Together they had two children, Brad and Lee Ann.
Rod and Beeper loved to travel. They went on several European trips as well as river cruises in the United States and abroad.
Rod had many hobbies throughout the years. He continued to hunt. He also enjoyed photography, hot air ballooning and calligraphy. Rod also belonged to the Rotary Club of San Antonio and the Calligraphy Guild.
Rod and Beeper loved the mountains and traveled almost every year to Green Mtn. Falls, Colorado where they spent some, if not all of the summer at the family cabin PineCrest. They moved to Colorado Springs in January, 2018.
Rod is preceded in death by Beeper Smith his beloved wife of 69 years.
Rod leaves behind children Brad Smith of Green Mtns. Falls, CO and LeeAnn (Ken) Friedrich of Florissant, CO; grandchildren Samantha Smith of Banger, ME, Kellie Smith of Liberty Hills, TX, Lauren Friedrich of Naples, FL and Brooke (Daniel) Carver of Arvada, CO; his adored great-granddaughters Finnley and Crawford Carver; his brother-in-law, Mel (Carol) Jones of Park City, KS; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Services will be held Friday, January 19, 2024 at 11:00 am at Swan-Law Funeral Directors, 501 N Cascade Ave, Colorado Springs, CO 80903. A reception is to follow. Interment will be at 1:00pm at Pikes Peak National Cemetery, 10545 Drennan Rd, Colorado Springs, CO 80925.
